FAQ on Emory Marketing Institute
Are you a department of Emory University, or a separate entity?
The Emory Marketing Institute (EMI) is a department of the Goizueta Business School at Emory University. We are a specially focused organization within the University with the goal of promoting the advancement of brand science.
What is the difference between “Brand Science” and just “Branding”?
The Institute is focused on creating a systematic body of knowledge by studying the real world and its manifestations through the use of scientific methods. Branding is sometimes undertaken without a emphasis on fact based management, so that is where we make the distinction.
Is the Institute a non-profit organization?
Yes, the Emory Marketing Institute is a non-profit center whose purpose is to advance the practice and knowledge of branding. We are an academic think tank, body of experts, in the discipline of brand management.
What is a “think tank”?
A think tank is a group organized to perform synergistic intensive research in solving problems.
How is the organization funded?
Our funding comes from corporate sponsors, grants, and the university.
When was the Institute established?
The Institute was established in 2004.
Where are you located?
We are based in Atlanta, Georgia.

Why is Emory University involved?
Brand management is a significant issue for companies in this era of globalization. It is being recognized as a critical business competency for businesses to effectively deliver value to their customers. Emory University’s Goizueta Business School already retains a leading group of academic researchers with internationally recognized expertise in marketing. By focusing the direction of this talent pool, in combination with interlinking outside resources, we can create something which is bigger than it would be if all of its constituents combined without such an organizing force. In essence, this organization creates a synergistic effect. The benefit is better findings in academic research.
What are the advantages of being at Emory University?
Emory University’s Goizueta Business School is one of the leading business schools in the world. The University has a tremendous collection of faculty members with expertise in marketing and other business disciplines. Emory also has access to vast resources through its library system.
What is the focus at EMI?
We research brand related issues. We are particularly interested in issues relating to brand valuation, private label interactions, brand dynamics, response models, services brands, B2B (business-to-business) branding, and technology branding.
